Charleston Material Recovery Facility Complex

Name: Charleston Material Recovery Facility Complex
Client: Freese Johnson
Location: North Charleston, SC

Facility Overview
Type: Material recovery from community waste sources
Project Size: 65,000 sf, 22 acres
Construction: New Construction

This new environmental management services development is designed to accommodate county EMD administrative offices, public education center, truck scales, and facilities for a 57-vehicle collection fleet including employee facilities, vehicle maintenance building, fuel island and fleet parking.

The driveway design separates bus/pedestrian from truck access to create safe entry points to the education center. In addition to grading, erosion control and a storm water drainage system, the site design includes a building service line tied into a gravity sanitary sewer collection system. The landscaping plan accommodates easement constraints from three major utility transmission lines on the property.

The new Charleston County recycling center is expected to save the county 1.5 million dollars a year and divert tons of waste from landfills. It will also serve as an education center for the public and school children.

Client Testimonial

"Your fluency in German certainly helped greatly in this regard by making it possible for Klausner technical and management teams in Germany and Austria to discuss design issues with you in either English or German. Klausner also benefited greatly from your thorough knowledge of the complex state and permitting processes."
